Chapter 2: Dust

During this week, we will be reading and reflecting on Chapter 2 of It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way. In this chapter, Lysa asks us, “What would happen in our lives if we really lived in the absolute assurance of God’s love in the midst of our disappointments?”

Day One:

A.) Reflect on Chapter 2

B.) When has your life felt shattered to the point of dust?

C.) How does the revelation that God desires to make something completely brand-new on this side of eternity speak to you right now?

C.) Jeremiah 18:6, John 9:5-6

Day Two:

A.) How do you relate to the story of Adam and Eve’s disobedience?

B.) What experience tempts you to doubt God?

C.) What are you tempted to believe about Him that isn’t true?

D.) Genesis 3:1-7

Day Three:

A.) When comparing Adam and Eve in Genesis 2 and 3, we can see what their natural condition was supposed to be before the fall. We see that they were innocent and did not feel the need to cover up or hide (Genesis 2:25). They were without need (2:9, 19). They were confident and not shamed. And they had perfect vision with no confusion or disillusionment. Of these four aspects of the life you were designed for, which are you yearning for the most in your current situation? Why?

B.) The verses below show that no matter which of these aspects you’re most missing, through a relationship with Jesus, God is providing these things for you today. Chose the scripture(s) that match(es) your situation.
Innocence – Colossians 1:22-23
Needs – Phillipians 4:19, 1 Timothy 6:17
Confidence – Job 4:6, Proverbs 3:26
Vision – Romans 1:19-20

Day Four:

A.) Where are you hoping for a new beginning?

B.) There is a large difference between “You must not” in Genesis 3:1 and “You are free” in Genesis 2:16. When looking at God’s protective commands, do you tend to view God as a “you must not” God or as a “you are free” God? How does that affect the way you relate to Him?

C) Genesis 3:15 – Known as the Protoevangelion, or the first good news, because it contains the first promise of the Savior. In the scripture to book connections, reflect on why it is important for you to keep close to your heart the fact that even on the day when He was sending Adam and Eve out of the garden, God was already promising to send Jesus to rescue them and us.

Day Five:

A.) In what ways are you willing to trust God’s process for your life?

B.) How would the way you walk through hard situations changed if you processed all of your disappointments with the absolute assurance that God is good and full of love and mercy?

C.) 2 Corinthians 5:1-5
