During this week, we will be reading and reflecting on the Introduction and Chapter 1 of It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way. I have broken out the questions we will answer and the scriptures we will study by day. Please look at the page Scripture ABC’s to see a suggested format for studying the scriptures and applying them to our current lives.
Day One:
A.) Reflect on the Introduction
B.) We need to process our disappointed feelings. To do that, we need to identify them. Imagine a scale from 1 to 10, with the one being small and the ten being huge disappointments. Write down some examples from your life for each number of the continuum.
C.) Romans 8: 26-28
Consider comparing this passage in your bible to The Message Bible. Its paraphrase is particularly impactful.
Day Two:
A.) What plans or thoughts have you had about how your life should turn out?
B.) How do you handle not being able to control the outcome?
C.) In what ways do you feel you’re attached to the outcome more than trusting God in the process?
D.) 1 Corinthians 15: 55-58
In the About the Scripture section, please consider how we can be victorious regardless of our circumstances.
Day Three:
A.) Reflect on Chapter One
B.) What disappointments are you currently facing?
C.) Are there any long-standing untruths you’ve been believing about your disappointment?
D.) Psalm 13:1-6
Day Four:
A.) As you look back and consider the past, what gifts have come out of your disappointments?
B.) In what ways can you learn to wrestle well in the midst of your right-now life?
C) Psalm 88
When reflecting ABOUT this scripture, how does it comfort you that this psalm doesn’t end with everything resolved?
Day Five:
A.) How does this teaching of the garden of Eden help you have a better understanding of what you are going through?
B.) In what ways do you try and capture or project an image of perfection? How does the lie that perfect is possible show up in what you do?
C.) Revelation 21:3-5
All questions are quoted or paraphrased from “It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way” or the “It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way Study Guide” by Lysa TerKeurst.
